Mexico

Things we like!

  • The People were incredibly friendly!
  • The food!  Mexico has the best Mexican food!
  • Volunteering at dog shelter
  • Mexico has Amazon!
  • They also have Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Costco!

Things we didn’t like as much

  • The taxi drivers like to charge tourists “extra”
  • So many stray, and mistreated dogs!
  • The vendors in tourist areas are very aggressive
  • It was more expensive than we were expecting

Michelle and I had spent roughly 30 hours traveling from Croatia to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.  We were both tired and thirsty.  So by the time we picked up our luggage and went through customs at the Cancun airport, the first thing we looked for was a place to buy two big bottles of water.  I stopped at the first vendor set up along the sidewalk in front of the airport terminal exit, and asked (in my best Spanish) for “dos, por favor!”  He handed me both bottles and when I tried to pay, he said he didn’t have enough change.  He wanted me to buy something else, but when I said I didn’t want anything else, he searched again for more change.  He found some and handed it to me.  Because everything was in Pesos, I was confused as to how much I really paid.  We walked away, and only later realized that I had actually paid $17 USD for 2 bottles of water!  It was the most expensive water that Michelle or I have every had the privilege of drinking!  But in all honesty, we were so thirsty we probably would have paid $20!  (We call these extra expenses a “stupid tax” and we normally end up paying 1 or 2 of these in every new place we travel!)

Places We visited

Playa del Carmen

We started out in Playa Del Carmen, and were here from the end of June until the end of August (so basically the hottest time of year).  We enjoyed Playa very much.  The beaches are gorgeous and the water is just the right temperature.  I was glad to learn that there has never been a shark attack in this area!

The Main Street of Playa Del Carmen is 5th Avenue.  It’s where all the most famous bars and restaurants are. It’s very touristy, with prices to match!

Iguanas are everywhere in Playa!
This is where we got our laundry done. We dropped it off, and it was all ready and folded by the next day.
We volunteered to walk dogs at the local shelter. This was our favorite part of being in Playa Del Carmen.

Cozumel

Cozumel is an island off the coast of Playa Del Carmen.  We spent 4 days here and loved it!  A short 45 minute ferry ride from the terminal in Playa to Cozumel costs about $32.00 USD round trip per person and is well worth it!  You can also buy a “hopper ticket” which costs $55.00 USD per person that includes both a round trip ticket to Cozumel (First Class), and a round trip ticket from Cancun to Isla Mujeres.  If you have the time, this is a good deal!

Cozumel is a snorkelers paradise!

View from the East side of the Island. A storm was brewing while we were there.
We rented this Jeep to get around the Island. It was a lot of fun and cost $50 per day.
Cozumel has many Beach Clubs that have great restaurants and snorkeling!

Oh yeah, there are crocodiles!

Merida

Merida is about a 3 1/2 hour bus ride from Playa Del Carmen.  It’s a beautiful city, with a slower pace than Playa.  We really enjoyed it here and decided that if we ever choose to live in Mexico, this is definitely a place we could live!

Merida is safer than any city in the U.S, in fact it’s been named the second safest city in North America, second only to Quebec City in Canada.

Everything is so colorful in Merida!
We took a bus from Playa Del Carmen to Merida which took 3 1/2 hours.

Merida had a lot of nice parks!

So many cool cool churches and buildings to see!
